What is GST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's unified indirect tax that replaced multiple taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty. Introduced on July 1, 2017, GST is levied on the supply of goods and services.

GST has multiple slab rates: 0%, 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Essential items like food grains attract 0% GST, while luxury items and sin goods attract 28% GST plus cess.

CGST, SGST & IGST Explained

  • CGST (Central GST) — Goes to Central Government (intra-state sales)
  • SGST (State GST) — Goes to State Government (intra-state sales)
  • IGST (Integrated GST) — For inter-state sales (combined central + state)
  • For intra-state: GST is split equally as CGST + SGST
  • For inter-state: Full GST is charged as IGST

Got Questions? We have you covered

To find GST from a GST-inclusive amount: GST = Amount - (Amount / (1 + GST Rate/100)). For example, for ₹11,800 at 18%: Base = 11800/1.18 = ₹10,000, GST = ₹1,800.

Non-AC restaurants: 5% GST (no input tax credit). AC restaurants and those in hotels with room tariff > ₹7,500: 18% GST (with input tax credit).

Residential rent is exempt from GST if the tenant is an individual for personal use. Commercial property rent attracts 18% GST. If annual rent exceeds ₹20 lakhs, GST registration is mandatory.
